社会学家Marc Smith和计算机科学家Danyel Fisher共同绘制了这幅可视化地图,用以描述2004年189,144个新闻组所发布的257,442,374份报道。该地图采用了最初由美国马里兰大学的Ben Shneiderman使用的树形图布局算法,每个方块代表一个新闻组。每个方块的大小反映其所对应的新闻组拥有的那些至少拥有两篇报道的人的数量。该地图用不同的颜色反映其与2003年相比海报数量的变化情况,红色代表减少;绿色代表增加。每个方块都用文字层次来标示的——例如:“rec.pets”包括“rec.pets.cats”,某个新闻组的增长或下降都可以一目了然,例如“alt.binaries”(左下方)的增长,以及“comp”组(中间靠右)的下降。
